How to Clean a Resin Lamp (and Keep Epoxy Resin Crystal Clear)
A resin lamp needs very little care, but the wrong cleaner can cloud epoxy in seconds. Here is how to clean a resin lamp safely, what you should never use on epoxy resin, and how to keep it crystal clear for years.
What you need
- A soft, dry microfiber cloth
- A soft brush, such as a clean makeup brush, for details and edges
- Lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap, for fingerprints only
- A second dry microfiber cloth
How to clean a resin lamp, step by step
- Unplug it. Disconnect the USB cable before you clean.
- Dust first. Wipe the resin gently with a dry microfiber cloth and use the brush around edges and the base. Once a week is plenty.
- Remove fingerprints. Dampen a cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, wring it out well, and wipe the resin. Never spray liquid directly onto the lamp.
- Dry right away. Buff with a dry microfiber cloth to avoid water spots.
- Wood parts: if your lamp has natural wood, wipe it with a dry cloth only. Don't soak it.
- Reconnect once everything is dry.
Never use these on epoxy resin
- Alcohol or acetone. Solvents can haze or soften the surface.
- Glass cleaners with ammonia and other harsh household chemicals.
- Abrasive sponges, scouring pads or melamine "magic" erasers. They leave fine scratches.
- Paper towels. They can leave micro-scratches on a glossy finish; microfiber is safer.
- Submerging the lamp. The LED base contains electronics.
What about light scratches?
Fine surface scratches can often be reduced with a plastic polish made for acrylic, applied with a soft cloth. Test it on a small, hidden spot first. For deeper scratches or damage on arrival, contact us at support@luxdesin.com instead.
How to keep epoxy crystal clear
- Avoid direct sunlight. UV light is the main cause of yellowing in epoxy resin.
- Keep it away from heat sources such as radiators, heaters and sunny windowsills.
- Handle it by the base to keep fingerprints off the clear resin.
Whale Shark Resin Lamp
Ocean scenes like this whale shark show off clear resin best, so a quick weekly dusting keeps them looking their deepest blue. See all ocean lamps.
Cleaning other resin pieces
- Headphone stands: clean them like a lamp, and wipe the top where the headband rests a little more often.
- Artisan keycaps: remove them with a keycap puller, dust them with a soft brush and never soak them. See our artisan keycaps guide.
- Resin statues: dust painted statues with a soft brush only. Avoid wiping painted areas with a damp cloth.
FAQ
How often should I clean a resin lamp?
Dust it once a week, and only wipe it with a damp cloth when there are fingerprints or marks.
Can I use a disinfecting wipe?
Most disinfecting wipes contain alcohol or other chemicals that can dull the surface. A cloth with water and a drop of mild soap is safer.
My remote stopped working. What should I do?
Replace the remote's battery first. If the lamp itself stops working because of a manufacturing defect, we replace it free of charge; see our refund and return policy.
